Fun With Headlines

It is a common humorous technique to take real headlines and find humor in them. For example, Jay_Leno is well known for having fun with headlines and news stories on The_Tonight_Show. He will take a typographical error in a headline and find the humorous alternate meaning this provides.


In a similar spirit, in 2002 the web site Fun With Headlines (http://www.funwithheadlines.net) began a daily routine of finding headlines with intentional or unintentional humor in them. While preserving the actual news headline just as it appeared on a news service, the site then pairs the headline with a humorous variation. Some examples from the site, which has a full archive section (http://www.funwithheadlines.net/archives.html), show the many variations of humor that exists:


  • Actual Typos:
  CVS Offers $4 Off When You Buy Stomach
  If you have an appetite for bargains.


  • Reversing Expectations:
  Chromosome Shrinkage May Promote Disease
  So don't do it.
  Gene Helps Determine How Much You Hurt
  And when Gene hits you hard, it hurts!
  Ex-Mich. Teacher Gives Kidney to Student
  Confused child thanks teacher, tries to figure out what to do with it.


  • Pointing Out the Obvious:
  The 10 Best Places in America to Have a Baby
  In a bed would be nice.
  2-Year-Olds Have Better Memories
  Than 1-year-olds.


  • Word Play and Pun:
  Man Fakes Choking to Get Women's Attention
  So women fake attention to choke off his advances.
  Farmer Offers Rental Cows on Internet
  You've got pail!


  770-Pount Moose Lands on Car in Norway
  Quantum experiment goes horribly awry.
