X-Factor (tv show)

From TheBestLinks.com

The X-Factor is an ITV1 talent contest, following on from the likes of Pop Idol and Fame Academy.

Hosted by Kate Thornton, judges Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, and Louis Walsh are looking for the UK's next big thing.

Auditionees are placed into three categories - 16-24, 25 and over, and a category for groups.

The show is labelled as the UK's biggest ever talent search, as it is the first contest to have no upper age limit, and to allow both solo singers and groups to compete.

The series was controversial from the beginning. Tabloid reports claimed that the show was fixed after it emerged that Louis Walsh had allegedly cheated and tried to help a band that he used to manage get through to the final stages of the show. Footage of Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne coaching contestants to argue back to the judges was also being sold over the internet to the highest bidder.

Simon Fuller, the creator of Pop Idol, claimed that the format was a rip-off of his own show, and filed a law suit against Simon Cowell, despite the fact that he is judge on both shows.

After five weeks of audition shows, the judges finally found out which categories they would be managing.

Sharon Osbourne will coach the 16-24 category, Simon Cowell gets the 25 and over category, while Louis Walsh will mentor the groups.

The judges will now compete, each hoping for an act from their own category to emerge as the ultimate winner of X-Factor.

Next comes the boot camp stage of the show, where the contestants who made it past the first round will be whittled down. Eventually the live shows will begin, with the viewers voting off a contestant each week, until one remains as the ultimate winner of the show.
