Wikia is a copyleft search engine which runs on wiki-style software, allowing users to add, remove or modify listings. The project replaced 3Apes in March 2004. This earlier project, which started in September 2002, had been a directory-style search engine. As of August 2004, Wikia is at a beta stage and has not been publicly launched.
Jimmy Wales, the founder of both Wikia and Wikipedia, claimed that one of its aims is to "prove that the organizational model of Wikipedia can be applied effectively to search". Users can categorize sites by keywords and by ratings of "adult" or "family". Quality ratings and language can also be assigned. Registered users can obtain lists of sites classified as "rogue affiliates" in which affiliate URLs are benefiting someone other than the site itself, and other listings not open to the public. As of May 2004, the site claimed to have 4061 registered users, most of whom had been automatically transferred from the earlier 3Apes project.
The database of links is released under the GNU Free Documentation License, and the software it runs on under the GNU General Public License.
The website is run on a for-profit basis, with a percentage of revenue being donated to the Wikimedia Foundation.
