It's probably too late but a white background for the elements images might have been better IMO. Any idea on how to incorporate these images into the element template? The mock-up for the phase II version is at Lithium. My original plan was to have images of the elements go below the locator map along with absorption/emission spectra bars... I wonder how a crop of just the part of your images that show the element sample would look. --mav

After I finish the crops, I'll cut to just the sample and reupload. I will probably also see if I can get Photoshop Elements to crop off everything but the samples.
Actually, this summer I can probably retake the whole set of photos with a white background.
BTW, your talk page it now too big for me to edit. -- RTC 04:11 Apr 21, 2003 (UTC)
Well, that completes the first upload of the Element Samples... Now I have to try some experiments with Photoshop Elements. -- RTC 06:49 Apr 22, 2003 (UTC)

Hm. Your test pages probably show the best solution for the images we have so far. But they do seem to be much taller than they need to be. I'll experiment with some cropping and HTML simplification to see if your setup can be improved upon. --mav

Hey - check out lithium. I really like that format but a higher resolution image would be better (if available). This was also fast for me to crop using the GIMP's lasso and smudge tools. --mav

We also need someone who is willing to go out of his way to take photos of the Radioactive elements, probably haing to get persmission from some science research place or university. -fonzy

Several radioactive ones just won't be available to photograph, of course. You will have to consider those... The kit I took these photos of just replaced all radioactive ones with crushed plastic in the vial. -- RTC 06:23 Apr 28, 2003 (UTC)

The sample photos are great! My initial reaction to photos of colorless gas was to complain to you, but then I realized that such a photo instantly tells the reader that the gas is colorless. I should be back to the element articles in late December or January (that's when I started the daily day page updates last year). --mav 11:36, 2 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I just wish the Fluorine and Chlorine vials had enough gas in them to show their colors... -- RTC 00:52, 3 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Can you please specify the license of your pictures as someone on the french wikipedia is complaining about the missing copyright notice Greatpatton 20:19, 6 Nov 2003 (UTC)

These element images look like they were taken with a 1996 300x200pixel camera. the quality is very grainy.

The images were taken with a Kodak 4 Megapixel camera and a 10 diopter closeup lens. The sample vials were placed on a white bedsheet to produce a "clean" background, and you can clearly see the fabric of this sheet in the photos. Some are not as sharply focused as others... but I am NOT a professional photographer, I did what I could in the time I had available to take the photos (one day).
The photos were then cropped out of the full photo using PhotoShop Elements and saved as both 600 pixel wide jpegs (about the size in the photo taken by the camera) and 125 pixel wide jpegs (reduced to fit in the articles, about actual size, and the ONLY size I originally intended on providing to Wikipedia). To keep the file size down, they were NOT saved at max jpeg quality!!! As it is, the large photos take more than long enough to transfer over slow dialup lines (which many users do still have).
Perhaps you have access to a full set of element samples and would like to spend a full 8 hour day photographing them, a few weeks of spare time editing them, and all the time it takes to upload them and link them to the individual articles!!! -- RTC 03:11, 25 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Don't listen to the Anon. I think the photos are great. :-) I also think that my opinion on this is a bit more important than an Anon whose only edit was to complain. What has this Anon done for Wikipedia? Nothing. --mav 06:13, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)
It's a great work I have added all your image (even the one you didn't put on en:) in the french wikipedia periodic table tank you. Greatpatton 22:29, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)
The ones I did not link were not linked because the articles lacked a table to put them in and I did not want to just drop them someplace into the text at random. -- RTC 01:28, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Your series of element photos is a great asset to wikipedia; especially the metals are beautiful. — Sverdrup (talk) 10:00, 28 Feb 2004 (UTC)

In thermionic emission you added that it was initially discovered by Professor Guthrie in 1873. I did a little searching and the only person I could find was physicist Frederick Guthrie in London who lived from 1833-1886, and did research on heat, magnetism and electricity. I assumed he was the right guy. Then I found Scottish physicist Peter Guthrie Tait (1831-1901) and found he did work on thermoelectricity. Which is right? I assume it is Peter, but I already assumed too much, so I will ask the source and leave it undefined for now... - Omegatron

I wish I knew which Guthrie it was, the source I used did not specify the full name (unfortunately) but I assumed it to be a last name. -- RTC 06:42, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I will keep searching... - Omegatron

Re vacuum tube, if you break the links, can you please make some way to link to the preexisting article properly? (I think the links should remain at vacuum tube however - the name may be inaccurate but that's the most common name for that device - or what about thermionic valve/valve?) The Titanium sample thumbnail photo doesn't seem to be working right on the Main Page. I think the "thumbnail squish factor" may be too high. Or maybe it's that percent sign in the name. My IE6 browser hangs on it. K7jeb 03:34, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

The correct name is Image:Ti,22-thumb.jpg There is no %, you are probably looking at the escape sequence %2C that is required for your browser to handle the "," correctly and is automatically translated by Wikipedia. -- RTC 04:31, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

> Did you correctly enter the name as Image:Ti,22-thumb.jpg ?

I did, and it works just fine except on the Main Page article. If I go directly to Titanium, no problem. I just have to avoid the Main Page for awhile. It's just weird. Thanks. K7jeb 04:37, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Oh, yeah, your articles on the elements are totally awesome!! K7jeb 04:41, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

> Those articles are one of the WikiProjects

Still awesome, dude! Later... K7jeb 04:54, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

It's still barfing on that one. I'm convinced it's something inside my IE6. More downloads from MSN, I guess.. K7jeb 06:32, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Updated everything from Microsoft and problem went away. Thanks for your help..... K7jeb 13:10, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

images on ifd

I'm replacing the thumbs with automatically generated thumbnails; e.g., [[Image:H,1-thumb.jpg]] becomes [[Image:H,1.jpg|125px|]]. The results of the two are nominally identical: Image:H,1-thumb.jpg and H,1.jpg. As I orphan the images, I'm placing them on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. Excellent job on the photos, by the way; a very nice contribution. Grendelkhan 08:07, 2004 May 12 (UTC)

Picture

Could write by the picture Image:P,15.jpg the licence information because i want to use them in the german wikipedia.Sorry for my bad englisch.I would be very happy if you could do this!my german user page (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Van_Flamm)

Thanks for your reaction. Van Flamm

I wanted to add my request that you specificy how you want to tag the pictures you've taken. Gamaliel Image:Cubaflag15.gif 17:43, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
