The University of Wisconsin System is the state university system in Wisconsin. It is made up of two doctoral-granting universities (UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee), eleven baccalaureate-granting universities (UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Parkside, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater), one associate-granting institution (the UW Colleges, formerly UW Centers) with thirteen campuses (UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, UW-Barron County, UW-Fond du Lac, UW-Fox Valley, UW-Manitowoc, UW-Marathon County, UW-Marinette, UW-Marshfield/Wood County, UW-Richland, UW-Rock County, UW-Sheboygan, UW-Washington County, and UW-Waukesha), and the UW Extension, which operates extension courses statewide through offices in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties.
The UW System was founded in 1971 with the merger of the University of Wisconsin, which included the Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay and Parkside campuses, the Centers and the Extension, and the Wisconsin State Universities, which included the other nine campuses. It serves approximately 160,000 students.
The University of Wisconsin (or simply UW) alone is commonly used to refer to the Madison campus, especially with regard to sports.
