Southern Alps

From TheBestLinks.com

de:Neuseelndische Alpen uk:Альпи Південні The Southern Alps is a mountain range which runs along the western side of the South Island of New Zealand.

Mount Cook is the highest point, 3,754 metres (12,283.3 feet). There are sixteen other points in the range that are over 3,000 metres in height.

The Southern Alps were named by Captain Cook in 1770, when he noted their 'prodigious height'.

Because of its orientation perpendicular to the prevailing westerly winds, it creates excellent wave soaring conditions for glider pilots. (See Omarama)
