Short I

From TheBestLinks.com

Й, й (Short I) is a letter in the Cyrillic alphabet.

It is the 11th letter in the Russian alphabet, and in Russian is called и короткая, I kratkoe or "short I". It resembles the letter И with a diacritic added.

It is the 14th letter in the Ukrainian alphabet, and in Ukrainian is called Йот, Yot.

Note that the short I is not found in many South Slavic languages, and is replaced by Ye.

In both languages this is a semivowel pronounced [j] (as in English yellow), which can be used to form diphthongs like the following:

  • ai in aisle
  • ei in vein
  • oi in oil
  • ui

It is transliterated as j, y, or i using different romanization systems. See Transliteration of Russian into English and Romanization of Ukrainian.
