A proverb (from the Latin proverbium) is an aphorism (a pithy saying which had gained credence through widespread or frequent use) which is believed to express some basic truth or practical precept. An aphorism which describes a basic rule of conduct may also be known as a "maxim", while a concise expression of a truth or practical precept which is distinguished by particularly good style may be known as an aphorism.
Proverbs of cultures which exist close to each other often overlap.
