The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization was a labor union which formerly represented air traffic controllers and weather observers in matters relating to wages, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
It came to national attention in the United States when on August 5, 1981, Ronald Reagan fired 11,359 striking air traffic controllers who had ignored his order to return to work. Some were subsequently rehired, but they and the replacements who were hired are now represented by a different union.
