Poverty pimp is a derogatory label used to convey the accusation that an individual or group is benefiting unduly by acting as an intermediary on behalf of the poor. Those who use this appellation suggest that "poverty pimps" profit from the misfortune of others and that if all the money collected on behalf of the poor were to actually find its way to the truly poor, poverty would cease to exist.
The most frequent targets of this accusation are recipients of government funding. In addition, however, the term is sometimes applied to an individual or group who solicits private charity for the poor.
