The Political Graveyard is an American Web Site dedicated to the display of basic information about United States political figures, especially the burial locations of those who are deceased. Its URL address is 'www.politicalgraveyard.com', and it currently indexes over 120,000 political figures, living and dead.
The site was created in 1996 by Larry Kestenbaum, a database worker at the University of Michigan and sometime local office holder. The site and its underlying database were developed from a personal interest triggered by the Dictionary of American Biography, which was its original data source. Since then his personal research, and the information contributions of hundreds of volunteers have greatly expanded the information available. The site now generates over 20 million hits each year, yet has remained largely commercial free.
Basic data
The database attempts to capture very basic biographical and office holding data for its political figures. Besides where they are buried, it records dates and locations of birth and death, offices held and the applicable dates, organization affiliations, and cause of death. It also reports their relation (at least by blood and marriage) with other politicians listed, their political party, and limited military history.
Over the years the definition of Eligible Political Figure has been expanded. It now includes most high federal officials, all elected and some appointed state-wide office holders, and mayors of major cities. It lists unsuccessful candidates, presidential electors, and delegates to conventions of the major political parties.
Use for Inquiry
One of the more useful features or the site are the many indexes, and their supporting data. Particular offices held or sought, locations (state and county), and dates are some of the major indices. By necessity, the site also includes Gazetteer like place name lookups and Cemetery name searches.
