PFC CSKA Sofia is the football club of the CSKA sports club of Sofia, Bulgaria, founded on May 5 1948.
CSKA stands for Central Sports Club of the Army. The club was founded in 1948 under the name of Septemvri CDV. Throughout its history it has also been known as CDNV and CDNA. Since 1962 the club has carried the name CSKA.
The club has had some major domestic and international successes. It won the Bulgarian championship 29 times, which has kept it in the Guiness book of records for quite some time.
CSKA is the Bulgarian club with the most notable achievements on the international scene.
In 1967 it was one step from a European Cup final, but was beaten by Internazionale Milan 1:0 in the second replay after two 1:1 draws. In 1981 and 1982 CSKA played in the semifinals of the European Cup again.
In 1989 CSKA played in the semifinal of the European Cup Winners' Cup.
Many great Bulgarian players have played for CSKA, including Hristo Stoichkov and Jordan Letchkov.
