Haiku Incorporated's Logo
Haiku, formerly known as OpenBeOS, is an open-source project dedicated to the recreation, followed by the extension, of the Be Operating System. It aims to be compatible with BeOS at both the source and binary level, allowing software written and compiled for BeOS to compile and run without modification on Haiku.
Haiku was originally named OpenBeOS when it was founded in 2001, but it was thought that a new name should be chosen to avoid any possible lawsuit with Palm, Inc., who aquired Be's intellectual property and technology assets (including the BeOS source code) in 2001. The new name, revealed at WalterCon in 2004, is intended to reflect upon the elegance and simplicity that attracted many to the BeOS platform, but is also a reference to the haiku error messages found in NetPositive, Be's default web browser, and many other Be applications.
Individual servers and APIs (collectively known in Haiku as "kits") are being developed from scratch by a team of volunteer enthusiasts. Haiku's kernel is a fork of NewOS, a microkernel written by former Be engineer Travis Geiselbrecht.
As of September 2004, a number of the kits are in beta testing stages of development, including the media kit, the networking kit, the printing subsystem and the screensaver daemon. All hold either full or almost full binary compatibility with BeOS applications and plugins. However, the most important stages of the operating system, the kernel and graphics server are, whilst working, not yet ready for public use.
