North East England is one of the regions of England. The region is also sometimes known by the alternative title, Northumbria. A more detailed look at the history, culture and dialect of the region may be found in the article on Northumbria.
The region is expected to have a referendum on November 4, 2004 about the establishment of an elected regional assembly.
It is divided into the following local government areas:
The region was originally defined as Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Cleveland. Since then, Tyne and Wear County Council has been abolished, Darlington has seceded from County Durham, and Cleveland was split into four.
The region is now considered to consist of four distinct 'sub-regions': County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, and Tees Valley (former Cleveland plus Darlington)
