Nissim of Gerona

From TheBestLinks.com

Rabbi Nissim ben Reuven (1320 - 1380) of Girona, known as the RaN (an acronym of his name), was born in Barcelona, Spain.

The Ran was considered the greatest Halachic authority of his generation, and queries were sent to him from throughout the Jewish diaspora.

His closest disciple was the Rivash. Ran's works include commentaries on the Talmud and on Alfasi's code, responsa, a recently published commentary on the Bible, and a collection of sermons.
