The Necrons are a race in Warhammer 40,000 suspiciously similar to the robots from The Terminator series, led by the malevolent C'tan (star gods). They are the equivalent of the Warhammer Fantasy undead.
Millions of years ago, the C'tan encountered a race called the Necrontyr. They saw in them a suitable slave race, and came to them as gods. They convinced the Necrontyr to shed their physical bodies and transfer their consciousnesses into mechanical forms to better serve them.
Something happened at some point, and the Necrontyr (now Necrons) went into hibernation, their civilization crumbling, until they awakened in the 41st millennium.
