My Little Pony

From TheBestLinks.com

My Little Pony is a line of colorful toy ponies aimed at young girls. The toys were introduced in 1982, following on from the related "My Pretty Pony" toy which was introduced in 1981. They became enormously popular throughout that decade, and redesigned versions were launched in 1997 and again in 2003. The original toyline inspired several animated specials, an animated feature length movie, and two animated television series.

All three My Little Pony lines have consisted primarily of plastic ponies with brushable manes and tails and specific symbols on their hips that allowed them to be easily identified. Some lines, such as the Sea Ponies, did not have tails; other lines, such as the Pony Pals, were based on other types of animal (such as camel, zebra, giraffe and lion). The My Little Pony toys are generally brightly colored or have rainbow-coloured manes and tails. Different patterns and symbols may be painted on their bodies.

My Little Pony was one of the most popular collectible toys of the 1980s, and is currently enjoying a highly successful comeback. A movie, several specials and two television series have been based around this toy.

The original line of My Little Ponies (referred to as 'Generation One' or 'Ponyland Ponies') lived in a place called the Dream Valley in Ponyland, and were ruled by Queen Majesty. After their original home, the Dream Castle, was destroyed, they relocated to the Paradise Estate. This toy line consisted of all different types of Pony, including Unicorn, Pegasus and Earth Ponies, Flutter Ponies, Summer and Windy Wing Ponies, and the wide variety of Sea Ponies. This line served as the foundation for the entire My Little Pony 'cosmos'.

A popular animated television series spun out of this generation. Each of the ponies -- Halfnote, Lickety-split, Wind-whistler, etc. -- had its own personality and voice.

The second line of My Little Ponies (referred to as 'Generation Two' or 'Friendship Garden Ponies') lived in Friendship Garden, and were almost entirely limited to Earth Ponies, although a few Pegasus and Unicorn Ponies were made. This line was largely popular in Europe, where it continued for several years after it had been discontinued in the United States. There were no television spin-offs for the G2 Ponies.

The current line of My Little Ponies (referred to as 'Generation Three' or 'Ponyville Ponies') is very similar to the G1 Ponies in construction and design, although they are as yet limited entirely to Earth Ponies. They live in Ponyville, under the regency of Princess Pink Sunsparkle. This line is currently in production, with new products every few months.
