British character actress Miriam Margolyes was born on May 18 1940, in London, England. The established performer made an impression on British television in the eighties with guest appearances in sitcoms like Blackadder, before winning acclaim for her performance as Flora Finching in Little Dorrit (1988), directed by Christine Edzard.
After settling in Los Angeles, the plump English actress won a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for her role in The Age of Innocence (1993). Margolyes is also an established voice artist, lending her vocal talents to numerous film and television productions, Babe (as sheepdog Fly) and Mulan (the Matchmaker), to name a few. She could also be seen as Aunt Sponge in the successful Roald Dahl adaptation, James and the Giant Peach, in which she also provided the voice for the Glow-worm.
She also starred as the Nurse in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet (1996).
Often playing stubborn, unlikeable old women, the grey-haired Margolyes has been recently alongside Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, Kenneth Branagh, Robert Hardy, Jason Isaacs, and the rest of the esteemed cast for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, playing Professor Sprout, the Herbology teacher. She was made an OBE.
