Macquarie University is an institution of higher learning located in North Ryde, a north-western suburb of Sydney, Australia. The University is named for colonial Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Founded in 1965, it was Sydney's third university. It is adjacent to the Macquarie Centre, a large shopping centre for the district.
The motto of the University is And Gladly Teche, taken from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
In 1990 the university absorbed the Institute of Early Childhood Studies of the Sydney College of Advanced Education, under the terms of the Higher Education (Amalgamation) Act 1989.
Transport to and from the university is primarily by bus and car, but an increasing number of students ride bicycles or live in or near campus, making walking an effective option. The construction of a new subway station at the university, part of the Parramatta Rail Link, is currently underway, which will alleviate transport headaches.
