Jim Ogston is a concerned citizen from Medicine Hat, Alberta. He led the group that fought for fair treatment from the city council, during an issue regarding the rights of businesses to sell pornography without the restrictions proposed by said city council. Restrictions were mainly that stores or businesses who's primary activities were adult in nature should located in industrial areas of the city away from residences and schools. As well, there would be a limitaion on how close they could be together to avoid creating an "adult" district. Ultimately the forces led by Jim Ogston were defeated and the restrictions made into law.
The team led by Mr. Ogston should not be perceived as one that was "pro-pornography." Rather their fight was one of civil liberities. As with all laws restricitng actions, including this one on such a divisive issue as pornography, the wider impact of the laws must be taken into consideration. Thus, does the law restrict actions which are legal or could the law be used in an abusive manner to restrict other actions which are legal.
