Houses in schools can be likened to the colleges of a university in that it serves as a method of dividing the students up into groups.
Houses may be named after particular teachers or colours or any suitable term within reason. Usually houses exist in order for sports to have opposing teams to play against without having to resort to interschool competitions.
In July 2004, the UK government's Department for Education and Skills announced that it would encourage all schools in England to adopt a house system[1] (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/3875073.stm).
