Harajuku Station at night
Harajuku Station at night

Harajuku (Japanese: 原宿) is the common name for the area around Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo, Japan. It is primarily known as a hangout for teens and contains many shops catering to them. It is a hotspot for the cosplay tribe (コスプレ族 kosupure-zoku), who dress in—and often create their own—elaborate costumes as a form of entertainment, rebellion, and group identification; this includes the Gothic lolita look (ゴスロリ gosu-rori).

Near the train station there is the Meiji Shrine which is famous for its great number of people who come to visit every year as well as Yoyogi Park. Also nearby are Takeshita Street, a street lined with fashion boutiques mostly for young people, and Omotesando, with cafes and fashion boutiques popular with residents and tourists alike. Local landmarks include the headquarters of NHK. The streets are heavily crowded on the weekend when teens from far away take time to come shop here. de:Harajuku fr:Harajuku ja:原宿
