Gunnery Sergeant
insignia
(U.S. Marine Corps)
Gunnery Sergeant is the seventh enlisted rank in the U.S. Marine Corps, just above Staff Sergeant and below Master Sergeant, and is a non-commissioned officer. They are assigned a pay grade of E-7 and the title may be abbreviated as GySgt.
Gunnery Sergeants are commonly referred to by the nickname "Gunny". The use of the term "Gunny" to refer to a Gunnery Sergeant is acceptable by everyone, including enlisted personnel who are of a lower rank. The term "Gunny" is unacceptable in ultra-formal situations, and there are a few Gunnery Sergeants who explicitly order their subordinates not to call them "Gunny", although usually highly junior personel may be ordered not to use the nickname.
