Grimlock is a character in the Transformers Fictional Universe. He is the leader of the Dinobots, taking the shape of a Tyranosaurus Rex. He is strong and primal.
Generation One Cartoon
Created by the the Ark transformers, the Dinobots were wild and uncontrollable until some reprogramming and a new brain made them a reliable fighting force. Grimlock, as the leader of this group, was provided with the most battle knowledge.
Around EY 2005, Grimlock was temporarily gifted with more intelligence, possibly from Vector Sigma. In this state, he created the Technobots, who could combine into Computron. After donating his intelligence to Computron, Grimlock returned to his old self.
Generation One Comic, Marvel
Grimlock in this series ended up intelligent very early on; He garnered a contempt for Optimus Prime, due to the fact that he sought peaceful resolution to a situation whenever possible. Grimlock still wanted to bash things.
Upon the death of Optimus Prime in this continuity's version of the Unicron Crisis, Grimlock was given leadership of the Autobots. The Autobot Matrix of Leadership served a lesser role in this series, and he was not named Prime.
Transformers: The War Within
Grimlock here was protrayed as any normal transformer, only with a slight speech impediment. He was around at least as far back as the time Sentinel Prime was killed, and Orion Pax recieved the title Prime. Grimlock resented Optimus Prime's initial decision to leave Cybertron, but gained a respect after the end of the first series.
In the War Within, Grimlock transformed into a large Cybertronian tank. He also had a as-yet-unexplained grudge against the Autobot scientist Jetfire, even going so far as trying to take his life.
Transformers: Generation One, Dreamwave
In this series, Grimlock, finally completely disinfranchized from the Autobots, rips his insigna off and temporarily joins with the Decepticons. When they leave him behind in a battle, Optimus offers a second chance to him, which he rejects in favor of striking it out on his own.
Other Usage
In the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons, there are subterranean creaters called Grimlocks which serve as an antagoinist to the player characters.
In the Table-top wargame Warhammer Fantasy Battle, the Lizardman hero Kroq-Gar rides a Carnosaur named Grymloq (a slightly Aztec-inspired respelling).
