Frank Wilczek

Frank Wilczek was born in New York, May 15, 1951.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of Chicago in 1970, a Master of Arts in Mathematics at Princeton University, 1972, and a Ph.D. in Physics at Princeton University in 1974. Frank Wilczek is a Professor of Physics at MIT. He worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the Santa Barbara Research Institute.

He is a U.S. Citizen. He married Betsy Devine (http://betsydevine.weblogger.com/) on July 3, 1973. They have two children (Amity (http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~wilczek/index.html) and Mira).

Wilczek has helped to reveal and develop axions, anyons, asymptotic freedom, and other aspects of quantum field theory in general. Asymptotic freedom, the decrease of interactions between gluons and quarks at very short distances, was the key to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), an important part of the standard model. Wilczek co-discovered asymptotic freedom at the age of 21, while he was a graduate student of David Gross at Princeton University, and these two gentlemen - probably together with David Politzer, who made the same discovery independently - are the most visible candidates for a Nobel prize among the researchers in particle physics.

He has researched condensed matter physics, astrophysics, and particle physics.

He is researching:

  • "pure" particle physics : connections between theoretical ideas and observable phenomena
  • behavior of matter : ultra-high temperature, density, and phase structure
  • application of particle physics to cosmology
  • application of field theory techniques to condensed matter physics
  • Quantum theory of black holes
