Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS) was a Soviet system to launch a nuclear attack upon North America via the "back door." This would involve launching weapons in a Molniya orbit, such that they would appear to take the path of a normal satellite, over the South Pole, and hit targets from the south, which is the opposite direction from which NORAD early warning systems are oriented. The FOBS threat was neutralized by the U.S. Defense Support Program early warning satellites.
