Male Anatomy

The epididymis is part of the human male reproductive system and common in all mammls. It is a narrow, tightly-coiled tube connecting the rear of each testicle to its vas deferens. During ejaculation, sperm flow from the lower portion of the epididymis where it functions also as a storage reservoir. Sperm are formed in the testis but are incomplete--- they lack the ability to swim forward in a forceful manner. During maturation processes in the epididymis, sperm gain the ability to swim and fertilize an egg. They are packed so tightly in the epididymis that they are unable to swim but are transported via the peristoltic action of muscle layers within the vas deferens on to the diluting fluids of the seminal vesicles and other accessory glands prior to ejaculation.

Inflammation of the epididymis is called epididymitis.
