The word draft used alone has multiple meanings:

  • An elemental and rough plan of a document, such as a manuscript or a piece of official government legislation. Important and lengthy documents often go through several drafts, becoming successivelly more refined at each stage until the final publishable product is produced.
  • From the tap (see draft beer).
  • a breeze or light wind blowing through an enclosed space (British spelling draught).
  • an enforced conscription by the government of young people (usually men only) into the military during a war.
  • the depth of the lowest point of a ship or boat, usually with a full load, and thus the minimum depth of any waterway through which it needs to pass; also refers to the curvature of the sail.
  • to suction water from a reservoir (see draft (water))

In compond words, draft may also refer to:

  • a draftsman, who draws up architectural diagrams and building plans.
  • a sports draft refers to a system by which professional teams pick players out of college in the United States.
  • a political draft refers to a grassroots campaign in which supporters try to convince a candidate to run for a certain office by showing a groundswell of support.
