A mirrored disco ball

A disco ball is a mirrored and faceted ball used to scatter light at a disco or other nightclub. The patterns of scattered light from a disco ball are an essential part of the ambience of a disco, and are difficult to recreate by other means. However, with the decline in popularity of disco in the United States, and the fact that modern electronics have made cheaper and far more flexible lighting systems available, disco balls have much less of a place in today's nightclubs than the clubs of 30 years ago.

Disco balls have been around for some time; for example, one can be seen in the 1942 movie Casablanca.

Miniature disco balls are sold as novelties and used for a number of decorative purposes, including dangling from the rear-view mirror of an automobile.
