Dawson County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 14,985, and its county seat is Lamesa6. Dawson County is named for Nicholas Mosby Dawson, a soldier of the Texas Revolution.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,336 km² (902 mi²). 2,336 km² (902 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.01% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,985 people, 4,726 households, and 3,501 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (17/mi²). There are 5,500 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.47% White, 8.66% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 16.56% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. 48.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,726 households out of which 35.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.40% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 20.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 124.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 129.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,211, and the median income for a family is $32,745. Males have a median income of $27,259 versus $16,739 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,011. 19.70% of the population and 16.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.20% are under the age of 18 and 12.80% are 65 or older.
