Darwin Day (12 February is an unofficial "holiday"-thing . The date is chosen because it is the birthday of Charles Darwin (1809-1882) who provided the first coherent theory of evolution by means of natural selection.
In particular, the movement wishes to have a public holiday on 12 February 2009 which will be the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the year will mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species.
The day is seen as important to the atheist/secular humanist community, which started it in 1994. Some creationists have called it worshiping of Darwin, see argument from evolution.
