Dae Joyeong established the kingdom of Bohai, reigning from 699 to 719. According to the Old Book of the Tang and the New Book of the Tang he was the son of the Sumo Mohe chief Qiqi Zhongxiang (乞乞仲象), while more accurate Korean records state that he was an influential general of Goguryeo. After the demise of Goguryeo at the hands of the Tang dynasty in 668, he moved all of the people under him to Yinzhou where he grew up with much Goguryeo influence. In 705, after many conflicts with Tang China, he declared himself "King of Goguryeo," in relation to his Goguryeo backround. He exerted much effort to maintain diplomatic relations with the countries around Bohai, including the Gokturk, the Khitan, Shilla, and Japan.

He was killed in 719, and his son Da Wuyi (大武艺) subsequently assumed the throne.
