Cross-cultural communication looks at how people, from differing cultural backgrounds, endeavor to communicate. It is more frequently referred to as "Intercultural communication".
The main theories for intercultural communication are based on the work done looking at value differences among cultures, especially the works of Geert Hofstede, Fons Trompenaars and more recently Shalom Schwartz. These theories have been applied to a variety of different communication theories and settings, most notably linguistics and rapport management (e.g. Helen Spencer-Oatey), marketing (Marieke de Mooij, Stephan Dahl, Jean-Claude Usunier) or general business (Geert Hofstede,Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner ).
