Clay County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century. As of the 2000 census, the population was 11,006. The county seat is Henrietta.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,891 km² (1,116 mi²). 2,843 km² (1,098 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.64% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,006 people, 4,323 households, and 3,181 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 4,992 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.35% White, 0.42% Black or African American, 1.03% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.68% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 3.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,323 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.20% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,738, and the median income for a family is $41,514. Males have a median income of $28,914 versus $20,975 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,361. 10.30% of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.70% are under the age of 18 and 11.00% are 65 or older.
