Charizard (Rizaadon in Romaji Japanese) is a Stage 2 fire-type Pokémon that evolves from Charmeleon at level 36. Unlike its predecessors Charmander and Charmeleon, Charizard has the ability to fly; it also possesses Charmeleon's fiery breath, which it uses as its primary attack weapon. Charizard's fiery breath is hot enough to melt rock, and it has been known to cause forest fires unintentionally.

In the Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions, Charizard has the highest total stats of the three fully evolved forms of the Red/Blue starter Pokémon (Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise).

Charizard is often compared with Typhlosion. Some argue that Charizard's Fire/Flying type combo is an advantage over Typhlosion's pure-fire type, because it doubles the resistance against Grass-type and Bug-type attacks, adds an extra resistance against Fighting-type attacks, and an immunity from Ground-type attacks. Others say it is a disadvantage because it doubles the weakness from Rock-type attacks, adds an extra weakness from Electric-type attacks, and cancels out the resistance against Ice-type attacks.

Name origin

Charizard's name is a combination of "Char" and "Lizard." The Japanese name, Rizaadon, is probably a combination of a pronunciation of the word "Lizard" and the Japanese word Don, which will be translated soon.

Availability

In Pokémon Red/Blue, Yellow and Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Charizard can be obtained by evolving Charmeleon. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Charizard is not available at all.

Strengths / weaknesses

Charizard is vulnerable to Water, Electric, Rock and (in Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow) Ice, and strong against Fire, Bug, Grass, Steel, Fighting and Ground.

In the anime

Charizard was one of Ash Ketchum's team members. It had evolved in order to challenge an Aerodactyl who had Ash as a hostage. Originally, Charizard did not obey Ash, and this lead to Ash's defeat at the hands of Richie at the Indigo League tournament's round of 16. This continued on until a battle against a Poliwrath in the Orange Islands, at which Charizard was frozen solid. Because of Ash's continuous effort to prevent Charizard from certain death, Charizard began to obey Ash.

In Pokémon: The Johto Journeys, Charizard leaves Ash in the Charisific Valley partially in order to strengthen itself, and partially because it had fallen in love with another Charizard. Charizard has returned on a temporary basis to battle with Ash, including a victory over Gary Oak's Blastoise in the first round of the Silver Conference. Of all of Ash's former team members, Charizard has made the most appearances.

Charizard now resides in Charisific Valley, where he continues to train.

While originally an act of defiance (see Charmeleon in the anime), Charizard often introduces himself to Ash whenever it returns by using a Flamethrower attack on his face. It also has a finishing move of sorts in its Seismic Toss attack, as most of the more powerful Pokémon that Charizard has defeated have been defeated in such a fashion. Only two Pokémon have been known to escape it, them being Drake's Dragonite in the Orange League championship and Harrison's Blaziken in the Silver Conference quarterfinals.
