The Centurion was a British Main Battle Tank of the post-war era. Coming into service just too late for World War II it proved to be one of the most successful British tank designs of all time. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Meteor engine derived from the Merlin aero engine but manufactured by the Rover car company. The tank weighed about 50 tons in battle readiness.Marks I and II were fitted with 17 pounder main armament and the Mark III with a 20 pounder gun. Secondary armament was a 7.92mm BESA machine gun. This was later replaced by a .300 calibre Browning and the tank designated Mark V.
