From TheBestLinks.com

Byron Ingemar Johnson (1890-1964) served as Premier of British Columbia from 1947 to 1952. He was first elected to the provincial legislature as a Liberal MLA in 1933 bit was defeated in 1937. In 1945 he returned to the legislature as an MLA for the Coalition party (under which the Liberals and Conservatives had fused) and in 1947 he became Premier. Johnson's government introduced compulsory hospital insurance and a provincial sales tax as well as expanding highways and railways in the province. The coalition collapsed in 1951 when the Conservatives withdrew and Johnson's government was defeated and Johnson lost his own seat in the 1952 election that saw the election of W.A.C. Bennett's Social Credit.
