Bulbasaur (Fushigidane in Romaji Japanese) is a fictional character: a basic grass-type Pokémon that evolves into Ivysaur at level 16 and Venusaur at level 32. Bulbasaur is a lizard-like creature with a large bulb on its back; the bulb grows with the Pokémon and contains energy that the Pokémon can use up when necessary, similar to a camel storing water in its hump.

Table of contents

Name origin

Its name is a combination of "bulb" and the greek sauros, meaning lizard (as in the word "dinosaur"). Its Japanese name, フシギダネ (Fushigidane), is a contraction of the words ふしぎ (fushigi, mystery) and たね (tane, seed).

Availability

In Pokémon Red/Blue and Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen, Bulbasaur is one of the starter Pokémon, together with Charmander and Squirtle. In Pokémon Yellow, Bulbasaur is not a starter; rather, it's obtained in Cerulean City. In Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Bulbasaur must be obtained through trading with another cartridge. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Bulbasaur is not available at all. However, Bulbasaur can be traded from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.

Bulbasaur also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap.

Strengths and weaknesses

Bulbasaur is vulnerable to Ice, Bug, Fire, Psychic and Flying, and strong against Water, Electric, Grass, and Fighting.

In the Pokémon anime

Ash Ketchum has a Bulbasaur that used to take care of abandoned pokémon together with a girl named Melanie, until it decided to go with Ash, but Ash had to battle Bulbasaur first before being able to have it travel with him.

Ash uses Bulbasaur's long vines to help him out of many tight spots. They are particularly useful when there's no ropes handy.

Bulbasaur is very wise for being a pokémon. Using its wisdom, it has decided not to evolve into Ivysaur.

Bulbasaur left Ash to keep order in Professor Oak's lab when the Pokémon there started fighting amongst themselves.

May befriended one, which now travels with her.
