Biography

Founded by bassist (later guitarist) Gavin Ward and drummer Andrew Whale in 1986, Bolt Thrower started out as a grindcore/hardcore formation but soon developed their trademark dark, slow and raw sound. After two demo releases and several lineup changes, they were discovered by BBC DJ John Peel in 1988 which led to a record deal with Vinyl solution; due to differences with their label, they soon signed with metal label Earache. After 6 album and two EP releases on Earache, they switched labels again in 1997, this time to Metal Blade.

The band's name, as well as many of their album covers and song lyrics, is an allusion to the popular tabletop strategy game Warhammer 40k.
