From TheBestLinks.com

Bharthiya Jana Sangh is the old name of Bharatiya Janata Party of India. It was started by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on 21st October 1951 at Delhi. The symbol of the party in Indian elections was the lamp. After the party's bad showing in 1984, it was re-launched as the Bharthiya Janata Party, which was the governing party of India until 2004 when the Congress Party won an upset election.
