A backdraft is a situation which can occur when a fire is starved of oxygen; consequently the smoke gases cool off and decrease in volume. The closed room is in underpressure and air may be draught in to form an explosive mixture with smoke gases. These can be ignited by the initial fire which is still glowing.
This is a very dangerous situation, often surprising even professional firefighters. It often occurs when a door or window is opened to protrude burning rooms.
Backdraft was also the name of a movie.
