Avalon (Japanese film)

From TheBestLinks.com

Avalon is a Japanese film by anime-director Mamoru Oshii, released in 2001. In the film playing in a dark future, video game player Ash tries to reach a special level in the game. The film mainly uses images looking almost black/white and having not much color; This way, Oshii shows an alternative reality in which you can't be certain if it's real or in the game.

The name of the film originates in the island Avalon from the story of King Arthur.

The film was co-produced by a Polish film company, Polish actors starred in the picture, and the movie was filmed in Polish. The film received only limited release in North America until Miramax released it on DVD in late 2003. The North American version has added narration which fans of the original say ruins the atmosphere of the movie.

Story

In a distant future there is a new form of video game. In a kind of virtual reality, players are fighting with modern, medieval and fantasy weapons in a world marked by war. Especially in higher levels the spirit of the player may stay inside the game, and the body stays vegetating in hospitals in the real world.

When Ash gets challenged by a better player, she makes up a team to get to the highest game level "Special A".
