Ava is a town located in Oneida County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 725.

The Town of Ava was formed from the Town of Boonville in 1846. The first settlers arrived in 1797.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 97.6 km² (37.7 mi²). 97.5 km² (37.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water. The Mohawk River runs through Ava.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 725 people, 257 households, and 193 families residing in the town. The population density is 7.4/km² (19.2/mi²). There are 285 housing units at an average density of 2.9/km² (7.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.21% White, 0.97% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 257 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.25.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 107.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,750, and the median income for a family is $40,000. Males have a median income of $28,750 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,406. 20.1% of the population and 14.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.8% are under the age of 18 and 14.9% are 65 or older.
