Asherton is a city located in Dimmit County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,342.

Geography

Asherton is located at 28°26'50" North, 99°45'41" West (28.447159, -99.761504)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,342 people, 428 households, and 341 families residing in the city. The population density is 624.3/km² (1,609.6/mi²). There are 535 housing units at an average density of 248.9/km² (641.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.56% White, 0.15% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 21.39% from other races, and 2.68% from two or more races. 94.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 428 households out of which 42.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% are married couples living together, 18.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% are non-families. 18.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.13 and the average family size is 3.62.

In the city the population is spread out with 35.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $20,417, and the median income for a family is $24,107. Males have a median income of $23,281 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $7,746. 35.8% of the population and 29.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.8% are under the age of 18 and 41.8% are 65 or older.
