Arab Americans constitute an ethnicity made up of several waves of immigrants from 22 Arab countries, stretching from Morocco in the west to Oman in the east. Although a highly diverse ethnic group, Arab Americans descend from a heritage that represents common linguistic, cultural, and political traditions.
A majority of Arab Americans come from Greater Syria, the region comprised of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan (about 62%). Arab Americans of Egyptian origin for the next largest group with 11%. Arab Americans from Iraq, Morocco and other nations are small in number but are present.
Most Arab-Americans are Christian. The largest religious group in the Arab American community are Catholics, Muslims and those of Orthodox Churches claim equal numbers and Protestant Christians are the smallest group. The largest Arab American population is found in California.
The US census counts those who identify as "Arab" as white, however socially, this is not the case with many Arab Americans.
Famous Arab Americans include Ralph Nader, Paula Abdul, Casey Kasem, Frank Zappa, and James Abourezk, among others.
