Amenorrhea is the absence of a menstrual period with the exception of childhood, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause.
Its causes include diseases or activities that disturb the flow of hormones. These could be damage to reproductive organs, weight loss, emotional stress, starvation and over exercising.
There are two types of amenorrhea, primary and secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea is when menstruation has not begun in a girl by the age of 14. Also, women show no secondary sexual characteristics like the development of breasts and pubic hair. However, no menstruation by the age of 16 despite the development of secondary sexual characteristics is also primary amenorrhea.
Secondary amenorrhea is where an established menstruation has ceased for about six months or the time of three menstrual cycles.
Since the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, located in the brain, control menstrual cycles, a disorder in any one of them could lead to amenorrhea.
The treatments are basically, putting hormones into the body, reducing physical activity, and resuming a sensible diet.
