Al-Hakam Ibn Hisham Ibn Abd-ar-Rahman I was an Umayyad Emir of Cordoba. During his reign a rebellion led by clerics arose on a suburb known as al-Ribad on the south bank of the Guadelqivir river. He managed to crush it, and insisted on sending the inhabitants of that suburb into exile by ship. They took Alexandria for about 10 years, after which they were expelled from it. They sailed to Crete, and one of their leaders established a dynasty there.
