Al Pedrique

From TheBestLinks.com

Alfredo José Pedrique García (born August 11, 1960 in Aragua State, Venezuela), best know as "Al Pedrique" (pay-DREE-kay), is a former Major League Baseball shortstop and right-handed batter who played for the New York Mets (1987), Pittsburgh Pirates (1987, 88) and Detroit Tigers (1989).

Pedrique was signed by the Mets in 1978 and made his debut nine years later. After five games with the team, he hit .301 with the Pirates in his rookie season, but only managed a .188 cumulative batting average after that.

In his 174-game career Pedrique hit for .247 (111-449), with one home run, 36 runs batted in, 32 runs scored, 18 doubles, 1 triple and 5 stolen bases.

In 2003, Pedrique came back to the majors as a third base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, after managing the Tucson Sidewinders to a pair of seasons above .500 - the only two since the franchise joined the Diamondbacks organization as their AAA affiliate in 1998.

Pedrique managed the Diamondbacks' AA affiliate in El Paso during 2001, and Houston's Single-A team in Michigan for two seasons. In 2000, his team won the Midwest League championship. Prior to that, he was a manager for the Kansas City Royals organization and in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Note

  • July 2, 2004 (AP). The Arizona Diamondbacks fired manager Bob Brenly on Friday in the midst of their worst season since their expansion campaign of 1998. Third-base coach Al Pedrique was named manager for the remainder of the season.
