The genus Agapanthus contains about twenty species of herbaceous perennials native to South Africa.

Agapanthus praecox)
Generally Agapanthus is classified in family Alliaceae, or alternately in the monogeneric family Agapanthaceae.
The funnel-shaped flowers show diverse bluish colours. They occur in many-flowered cymes on long, erect stems (sometimes up 1 m long). The basal leaves are curved, lanceolate and up to 60 cm long.
The genus contains the following species as well as a number of hybrids, and several varieties are widely cultivated as garden and landscape plants.
