Aedanus Burke

From TheBestLinks.com

Aedanus Burke (16 June 1743 - 30 March 1802) was an American politician. He was born in Ireland in 1743, but immigrated to the United States and fought in the South Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War. From 1778 until 1785 Burke was a judge of the South Carolina circuit court, spending much of time fighting the occupying British forces. He also served in the state legislature from 1779 to 1788.

Though opposing the United States Constitution as a member of South Carolina's ratification convention, Burke served in the new federal government as a U.S. Representative in the First United States Congress. He did not run for re-election, preferring to remain a judge in his home state. He served on the courts of equity until his death in 1802.
